The Road Ahead for the SSC
The following areas of interest were mentioned in a brainstorming session on the occasion of our second birthday party:
Editorial Policies Regarding Endorsements of Candidates
How do newspapers and other publications make decisions as to which candidates they endorse. Invite someone from the Post or other paper(s) to speak to us about their policies.
Oaxaca, Mexico
Perhaps Kelly Alm will speak with us about her summer spent in Oaxaca. She left for home just after the disturbances there broke out.
What is the Legal Status of the Marriage Amendment?
The Marshall-Newman Amendment passed, but is it constitutional? What will be its impact?
The Piedmont Environmental Council
Invite Georgia Herbert and others to speak with us about the work of the Council, specifically addressing the imminent threat of massive high-power lines crossing our county.
Virginia Government and the Upcoming Elections of ‘07
Invite members/candidates for House of Delegates and Senate to speak with us.
What is the Homestead Exemption?
Invite someone to speak with us to explain this state law.
Local Government in Fauquier
Invite a speaker to explain our local government and the many offices that will be filled in the 2007 elections.
Post-Mortems on the 2006 Elections
Invite Shawn O’Donnell, Judy Feder, Andy Hurst, and others to give their perspectives on what happened on November 7 and their visions of the future.
Economic Development
How can the Democratic party establish relationships with rural Virginia? Look into grassroots organizing, rural empowerment, etc. Apollo Alliance?
Voting Mechanics and Security
Invite members of Virginia Verified Voting, the Virginia Accountability Project (David Poole?), local Boards of Election, etc., to inform us of the issues related to voters’ feeling confidence that their votes will be counted properly.
High School/Youth Outreach
Try to interest high school students in meeting with us, since our original students have graduated and moved on. One way to interest them and shake them out of apparent apathy may be through “future shock” which might open their eyes to how the world will be in 10-20 years if our course is not changed.
SOL
Special needs children are left behind by requirements of the Standards of Learning and No Child Left Behind Act, and teachers are restricted by needing to “teach to the tests.” Invite speakers to address this issue and tell us how we can help.
Freedom of Information Act
Is it gone?
Department of Peace
Invite speakers and members of the state organization to address this bill which was most recently introduced by Rep. Dennis Kucinich.
Global Warming
We will be obtaining a copy of Gore’s movie, An Inconvenient Truth, and may want to host a showing in a public venue. Speakers may be invited to address this issue and related issues such as biodiesel, wind power, solar, etc., suggesting steps each of us as individuals may take to reduce carbon emissions, etc.
World Café
Consider hosting a World Café-type session on a topic of interest. (Read about this type of gathering here.)
ACLU
Invite someone from Virginia or national ACLU to speak with us about Freedom of Information Act, the First Amendment, the NSA spying situation, and the Patriot Act.
